Foundational Research

Precision medicine is fundamentally built on the ability to understand the genetic basis of disease and to analyze the molecular complexity of human physiology in both health and disease. At Columbia University, world-class researchers are conducting and applying the most exciting and cutting-edge research in a number of areas including, genetics and genomics, immunology and microbiology, systems biology, stem cells, neuroscience, structural biology, model systems, physiology, data science, engineering, and biomedical informatics.

Key to the success of the foundational research component of the Columbia Precision Medicine Initiative is a drive to build as many connections as necessary and to make interdisciplinary research one of the hallmarks of the initiative. Ultimately, many of the discoveries at this fundamental level will play an important role in the overall success of precision medicine.
